inktober: a challenge to create an ink drawing every day in October and post it.
Today’s drawing is done with a close friend who loves lions in mind.
The reference for the drawing is from a photo by Maurits Bausenhart that I found on Unsplash.
Since I had no experience in doing ink drawings I have been keeping the subjects for the daily drawings simple. Plus there is a time constraint. I am working on two quilts that need to be done before December. I would like to try a drawing that is more demanding, so I am going to be on the lookout for good reference for it.
Painting
Here is another young friend and her dog on a camping trip. This is a fairly recent painting.
I had a lot of trouble with the person’s face. It was too small to put in much detail and I didn’t have a brush small enough. I have since purchased smaller brushes.
I did have fun with the rocks and water. It took a lot of trial and error experimenting to get them to a satisfactory state.
Temari Ball
Usually temari are identical on each side. This temari ball has one large rose on one side and a pattern to represent leaves on the other.
The rose and the leaves are traditional patterns. The bottom of the ball, where the leaves are, is done in the kiku stitch, which is much used and very versatile.
The center of the rose is done by layering pentagon shapes. Each round of the pentagon shapes is started at a different point so that it is offset from the previous round. Each alternative round is done in a different colour. This gives it that striped effect.
The outer two rounds of the rose are woven and one of them is a kiku stitch, so you get the points of the kiku facing inwards.
