Inktober 29th

inktober: a challenge to create an ink drawing every day in October and post it.

The book Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss was a favourite when my children were little. I loved the book for its easy to read rhymes and wonderful illustrations. This drawing brings back another happy memory.

The reference for this drawing is a photo by Josh Applegate found on Unsplash.

This was a tricky picture to draw, just because of the two hands. Hands are not my favourite thing. Otherwise it was an easy one.

One tool I have been using is a proportional divider, shown below. It gives you the measurements larger or smaller in proportion to the original size. It is very handy in transferring a picture from one size to another.

Painting

Yes, the deer is green. There is no deep symbolic or philosophical reason for the green deer. It just felt right to paint it green at the time.  Just like it felt right to paint a blue bear.

The painting is done in acrylic on stretched canvas. It is 11×14 inches.

Temari Ball

This ball is called Mike’s Best Catch. Mike is a man who likes to fish and who managed to acquire a wife and daughter. They are his best catch ever. The two fish are only on one side, unlike most balls where the design is repeated on both sides or as many faces as the ball’s marking lines define. The back of this ball has three woven bands, or nets.

The ball is 33.5 cm around. It combines traditional stitches like the tails and the woven bands with free-form embroidery stitches and the woven stitch for the fish scales which is my own design.
