Inktober 21st

inktober: a challenge to create an ink drawing every day in October and post it.

A child flying a kite. Another memory – taking children to an empty field to fly kites. It was the best place to do it, no trees, buildings, or wires. I flew kites for many years as a stress reliever. I could stand still or even sit down and watch that kite in the sky for as long as I wanted.

Hmm, I wonder if I still have a kite tucked away in the storage room somewhere!

Temari Ball

This ball is supposed to represent the much maligned dandelion. I like the bright yellow flowers that bloom so stubbornly in boring expanses of green.

This ball is larger than average – 40 cm circumference. In this photo you can see the thin gold thread that marks the ball into geometric divisions. These markings determine the placement of the designs stitched on the ball. There are eight groupings of three flowers. Each grouping is separated by the four pointed stars done in green.

I suppose I should have done the flowers totally in the light yellow, but it felt right to use the darker orange. I don’t always have a logical reason for the choices I make.

Painting

Here I went a little wild. The brush strokes and colours were freer than I usually am. I really enjoyed doing this and I decided to incorporate more wildness in my future paintings.  That was easier said than done. It is hard to retrain yourself to a new style. I keep falling back into the habit of fixating on getting details just right. However I have played with colour more, like in the blue bear from yesterday’s post.  I am still working on freeing up my strokes.

Another place that I am trying playfulness with colour is in art quilts. I have just started doing them, so the only finished one I have is the one I showed in the first blog.  It is a portrait done in orange.
