Temari Balls: A Japanese Handcraft
Temari balls are a form of folk art that originated in China and were introduced to Japan in the 7th century. Originally, they were made from herbs and leather. The noblewomen of Japan crafted theirs from silk and kimono scraps. The Temari ball is a symbol that represents great loyalty or a valued friendship.
Nowadays these decorative balls are traditionally embroidered in geometric patterns and intricate designs. They are given as gifts on all occasions.
All the balls on these pages were made by me. Each one is unique, and based on traditional designs or original, non-traditional designs.
